About Root & Rise Consulting

our philosophy

how we do things

✿ We believe in transforming systems alongside transforming hearts and minds. One cannot sustainably shift without the other.
✿ We believe in restorative justice instead of punishment, healing instead of shame, and courage instead of complacency.
✿ We believe in divesting from harmful systems and structures that no longer serve us and investing in creating new,
healing systems to replace them.
✿ We believe restorative justice and equity are dialectical and creative practices that ask us to approach each other and the world with more curiosity, care, and compassion. We believe this work is both rigorous and joyful.
✿ We believe that conflict doesn’t happen in a silo. We believe in clearly naming and identifying root causes to have more honest conversations. We believe no person is an island and that relational wounds must be healed relationally.
✿ Above all, we believe that we all have what it takes to transform our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the world if we are brave enough to turn towards each other. The seeds of justice, wisdom, and resilience are already within us. Our role is simply to nurture the conditions where they can grow.

our approach

hard on systems, soft on people

We bring a trauma-informed, equity-centered lens to every engagement. Our approach centers collaboration over hierarchy. We believe in collective power. As facilitators and trainers, we strive to co-create spaces for shared wisdom, learning, and dreaming. We believe that the greatest change happens when people feel seen, heard, and supported to do things differently.

Jamila Osman portrait

Hello! My name is Jamila Osman and I’m a lead consultant and facilitator with Root and Rise. I am a certified K–12 educator, doula, and mediator with over a decade of experience at the intersection of education, creative strategy, and restorative justice. I have worn many hats in my professional life, working as a high school teacher, an editor, a journalist, a curriculum developer, a policy analyst, and have lived on three different continents.

I have helped grow babies, nurture young minds, and expand readership and audiences, but the most important work I have ever done has been learning to tend to our relationships with ourselves, each other, and the planet, and supporting others as they learn to do the same.

Years ago, when I advised the multicultural club in the high school where I taught, my students were in charge of planning a diversity assembly. The theme they chose was: It is a line from a poem by Luis Valdez that draws on Mayan philosophy. This is the ethos and guiding light of my work — the recognition that true healing is collective, and that in an era of intense social fragmentation and isolation, we are healed only by our willingness to face each other and ourselves.

At Root and Rise we believe that many hands make light work and our team of collaborators bring a wide range of skills, expertise, and lived experience to this work.

We believe in the capacity of every individual and institution to grow toward equity and justice.
